Bargain Bin Lookout- April 6th, 2008

leave a comment »

Not much on the “must-have” list this week, although my purchase this week is inspired by the fact that Chris Nolan has made at least 2 of my favorite movies of all time.

Memento– I don’t think it’s really a spoiler, but for safety-sake I’ll avoid it in case anyone else has somehow gone this long without hearing about the twist ending to this movie. All I know is that since this came out, way back in 1999 I believe, Chris Nolan has made Batman Begins and The Prestige, easily two of my favorite films to watch….over and over again….and that makes me want to see how Memento compares. I have an ever-evolving taste in movies, thought since 1999 I think it’s safe to say mine has changed significantly.

Worth a Look: Nothing else, really.

Bargain Bin Lookout – March 30th, 2008

Here’s a look at some good bargain bin deals this week:

Home Alone 2 ($4.99)- I’ve always enjoyed watching both this one and the first Home Alone during the holidays….they just get me into the Christmas spirit.  While this one is not nearly as put-together as the first, it still manages to capture some of the charm from the first film.  A great deal of the gags are recycled from the first, with little winks to the first film sprinkled throughout, and it still is hilarious (though still unbelievable at points) to watch Marv (Daniel Stern) get hit in the face with bricks repeatedly…..

The Da Vinci Code (I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this one when it came out…It was the summer that started with the bomb that was Mission Impossible III….by the time I made it to The Da Vinci Code, I was aching for a summer hit….and wasn’t disappointed.  While the book is far superior, you have to admit, this one is a pretty faithful adaptation.  It’s also very cool to see how they translated some of the scenes from the book…..BARGAIN!

CIRCUIT CITY (Buy 1 at $9.99, get one free)

The Italian JobI don’t ever remember seeing this in theatres, and actually didn’t consider it until a friend told me to watch it…sort of the same as everyone did with The Bourne Identity…..I wish I had seen it though, because it really is a solid mix of action and comedy…and you’re probably going to at least want to test drive a Mini Cooper after watching it….One of Mark Wahlberg’s best movies…and Charlize Theron shines also.

School of RockI’ve never actually seen this, but at buy one get one free, I figure this is a good one to take a shot at purchasing without watching.  I’ve heard good and bad, but there is the moment they use in those apple commercials that seems to make me think I might actually enjoy this one……I hope.

Prison Break S2 DVD Release!

leave a comment »

The second season of Prison Break will go on sale August 21st….

Honestly, I’m quite excited to see how it runs together upon second viewing.  I’m actually bummed it comes out so late.

That date will probably overlap really closely with the season premiere, if they stick to premiering earlier than everyone else.

Upcoming DVD Release

I thought I’d go ahead and post this, because I’m anxiously awaiting its release.

Casino Royale, the latest Bond adventure, will be released on March 12th, in both Full and Widescreen Special Editions.

The movie is essentially a “reboot” of the Bond franchise, fresh on the tails of Batman Begins and Superman Returns (moreso Batman).  Bond is a rookie, and we see him at the beginning of his Double-O career.  There’s alot of great action pieces…My personal favorite is the opening sequence of “free-running”….That jump between the two cranes makes me hold my breath every time.

Overall, I consder this a top-notch Bond film, though I’ve liked pretty much all of them since Goldeneye.  Daniel Craig has take over as my favorite Bond, but Pierce still is right behind.  If you liked any of the previous Bond films, especially Goldeneye, I’d go ahead and just add this one to your collection.  Skip the rental….It’s just that good.

I can’t wait to see this one again…..
